Repairing Texture, Not Removing It
This page is for people who like their textured ceiling or wall and want the damage to vanish into it. The goal is a repair nobody can find.

Textures We Match
Each texture was applied a certain way, and it has to be matched the same way.
Knockdown Texture Repair
Spray the texture, let it flash off, then knock it down with a wide blade. Timing is everything, which makes knockdown the hardest texture to match by hand.
Orange Peel and Splatter Finishes
Common on walls in apartments and newer homes. We adjust compound thickness, air pressure and tip size until the dimple size matches the wall around the patch.
Swirl and Rosebud Ceilings
Hand-brushed swirl patterns are common in Kingston's 1960s and 1970s housing. We study the arc and spacing, then brush the pattern into the repair by hand.
Skip Trowel and Hand Applied Textures
Hand-troweled textures carry the rhythm of whoever applied them. We blend new trowel marks into the existing pattern rather than creating a new one.
Sand Finish and Textured Paint Walls
Some walls get their texture from paint with sand mixed in. We rebuild the surface, then match the texture in the finish coat.

Why Most Texture Patches Are Visible and Ours Are Not
Every contractor says seamless. Here is what that actually takes.
- Test panels first. We spray or brush the texture on a scrap of board and compare it to your ceiling in the same light before touching the repair.
- Match aggregate and pressure. Aggregate size, compound thickness, spray pressure and nozzle distance all change the pattern.
- Feather the edge. Texture is blended gradually into the existing surface instead of stopping at a hard line.
- Prime for sheen. A patch without primer absorbs paint differently and shows as a dull or shiny spot, even when the texture is perfect.
Honest advice
When a Full Re-Texture Beats a Patch
Sometimes a patch is not the right answer. If the existing texture has yellowed with age, the damage covers more than about a third of the ceiling, or the texture was made with tools nobody uses any more, a patch will never truly blend.
In those cases we will recommend re-texturing the whole ceiling. It costs more than a single patch but less than three failed attempts, and the whole surface ends up uniform.

Painted Texture Is a Different Job
Painted stipple and knockdown behave very differently from bare texture. New texture will not bond well to old paint without the right primer, and the patch must match the sheen of paint that has aged for years.
That extra preparation and finishing is why painted texture repairs cost more. We will tell you up front if your ceiling has been painted.

Can you match my existing ceiling texture exactly?
In most cases, yes, closely enough that you cannot pick it out in normal light. If a perfect match is not possible, we will tell you before we start and discuss re-texturing the whole surface.
Why does my previous texture patch look different in daylight?
Usually the aggregate size or pattern was wrong, the edge was not feathered, or the patch was painted without primer so the sheen differs. Daylight rakes across the ceiling and exposes all three.
Can textured walls be repaired without redoing the whole wall?
Yes. We patch, texture and blend the repair area, then prime it. Painting the full wall afterwards gives the most even result.
Do you paint after matching the texture?
We prime every repair. Painting can be added to the quote, or your own painter can follow on.
What if my texture contains asbestos?
Ceiling texture applied before about 1990 should be tested before it is disturbed. If it tests positive, a qualified abatement contractor must handle it first. Our popcorn ceiling removal page explains the process.
